Introducing

We want you to meet the team at Burghley Retirement Living, so let us introduce 55-year-old Samantha Barks, who is the sales consultant at Albany Lodge, our luxury retirement development in Derby.

Read on for more about Samantha, who has more than a few unusual hobbies and who’s door is always open for a smile, a chat, and a cup of tea.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I am 55 years old, so I could officially move into a Burghley Living apartment now! And very much like the people I support at Albany Lodge; my life is active. I am a salsa dancer, and I do ballroom dancing. I absolutely adore dancing and music. I have two boys aged 18 and very nearly 16. My youngest and I roller skate; we try to go every week.

Believe it or not, I also ride large motorcycles. I own three and I have been to work on one of them, much to the amusement of the homeowners. I’m also big on DIY and do a lot myself. I’m a woman of many facets and I’m always very busy.

What is the most asked question about Albany Lodge?

I think people mostly want to know how many apartments we have sold and how many residents there are currently – people want to know that there are other people living here so that they won’t be alone. The good news is there’s a great mix of homeowners living at Albany Lodge, Derby who warmly welcome any new neighbours.

Luxury retirement development

What in your opinion is the main advantage of moving into a property like this? Do you have any tips for making the move?

Some of the apartment owners have forged strong friendships together, especially the single ladies because they’re spending time together instead of being on their own. Through moving into the apartments, they have a social life again; they are not isolated or lonely. Sometimes they get together for a Prosecco, or they might watch sporting events together on TV. They all get on well together. It’s wonderful.

Aside from that, the grounds and buildings are all beautifully kept which takes a lot of responsibility away from our owners, so they can focus on living their best life, without those elements of maintenance and stress.

If they don’t want to drive anymore, they can give up their car here without any concerns because everything is on your doorstep. All facilities, all the shops, everything just to hand and there is a real sense of community. And community spirit is certainly in abundance at Albany Lodge!

The best piece of advice I’ve heard is to move whilst you’re able, before it becomes a necessity and is harder to make the move, both physically and mentally.

What is your favourite part of the Albany Lodge development?

we have some absolutely fabulous people living here.  In terms of outlook, the fabulous view over the top from the East Elevation, and the West Elevation over the wooded walkway.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is spending time with the current and future apartment owners. There’s so many lovely people living here. I adore every single one of them. I can’t express how much this job isn’t like a job. It’s just such a delight to come to work and spend time here. It’s a dream really.

Where is your favourite place to spend time in Derby?

I love to dance, and so I spend Sunday afternoons/evenings regularly at Revolucion de Cuba, dancing and eating with great friends

National Dog Day with Pam Ward and Burghley Retirement Living Albany Lodge

A best friend and a well loved companion that can turn a simple game of fetch into a grand adventure. At Burghley Retirement Living, we have always had a soft spot for your furry friends and on the 20th August, we will be celebrating “National Dog Day” (and yes, you guessed it, you can even head to your local high street to buy your Dog a card to mark the occasion). At Burghley Retirement Living, we are big fans of your 4 legged chums and our pet friendly retirement living apartments are perfect for dog and cat owners alike. We have taken some time to speak to Pam Ward, one of our homeowners at the newly opened Albany Lodge in Derby to find out about her life with her pet dog, Ollie.

Ollie is a beloved 6 year old Shih Tzu who used to live with Pam in their family home until she took the plunge to move to a luxury retirement living apartment at Albany Lodge. Pam decided to move to Albany Lodge after the sad loss of her husband two years ago, realising that the road she lived on was a lonely place that lacked community spirit. Even with walking Ollie daily, she hardly saw anyone else on her road and she knew that something needed to change. She confidently took the decision to boost her social life by making a few changes to her lifestyle. Taking the plunge, she started working in a charity shop as a volunteer for a local hospice, Treetops, for a few days a week and with her heart set on living in a retirement community, she moved to Albany Lodge where she has made firm friends with like-minded retirees.

Ollie of course was Pam’s biggest worry, he had always had a large garden to play in, but even without a dedicated outside space he has settled in really well to his new apartment. This is in part due to his constant view of the outside world in the form of the shared communal landscaped gardens, and of course his popularity amongst the other residents. During our chat with Pam, she quipped: “Everyone loves him!”.

When it comes to taking Ollie for a walk, there are lots of paths and pavements around Albany Lodge, but Ollie loves grass! This is something Albany Lodge provides in spades, as just beyond the cycle track there is a big field for Ollie to run around, plus if you are considering bringing your pet to Albany Lodge, Pam recommends two local parks.

1. Markeaton Park

A 5 minute drive from Albany Lodge is Markeaton Park where Ollie and Pam visit most days. It is Derby’s most visited park and claims to be one of the most popular attractions in the East Midlands! The park offers a lot of space for Ollie to run around and a place for Pam to escape from day to day living and city life and experience a little bit of countryside.

2. Darley Abbey Nature Reserve

Just 10 minutes in the car is a treat “walkies” for Ollie. Darley Abbey boasts a nature reserve, and Darley Park. The nature reserve offers a circular walk by the river whereas the park runs along the banks of the River Derwent and is the largest open space in Derby, perfect for letting Ollie off the lead.

When they do get back home after stretching their legs, Ollie heads to his basket for a rest whilst Pam frequents the Communal lounge at Albany Lodge. Pam has used the big lounge space to host her own prosecco get together with her friends from the charity shop and she often meets up with the other homeowners to have a morning coffee in the lounge before work or before a big walk with Ollie!

If you’re looking for a friendly retirement living community that welcomes pets, look no further than Burghley Retirement Living, with over 55’s apartments available in Derby, Thornton-Cleveleys and Brighouse. Find out more or book a viewing by calling: 0800 999 1989

Thornton Primary School - Word Book Day Celebration 2023

The team at Burghley Retirement enjoyed the magic of World Book Day this year, thanks to the pupils at Thornton Primary School.

Pupils in Beech Class were invited to put pen to paper and write their own original stories, which were entered into a short story competition run by Burghley Retirement. Their stories were shared with the team at Royles Lodge to read and enjoy, as well as select three winners.

Ellie May Turner was crowned as the winner thanks to a fantastic story entitled ‘Why Babies Don’t Make Sense!’. Poppy Hill and Skyla Rose were chosen as the runners up with stories entitled ‘This One Girl’ and ‘The Girl Who’s Mind Went Boom!’. All three pupils were awarded a National Book Token to help them continue to enjoy their love of reading.

Declan Fishwick, Marketing Manager for Burghley Retirement Living, said “The enthusiasm and confidence from the children in telling their stories has been great fun to witness. We thoroughly enjoyed reading through each entry. We have some very talented young writers in Thornton-Cleveleys, it was hard to pick just one.”

“We want to say a big thank you to the pupils and teachers at Thornton Primary School for being so thoughtful, kind and making us part of their World Book Day celebrations. Hopefully next year we can invite them all to Royles Lodge to read to us in person!”.
